The much anticipated Destin Fishing Rodeo tournament is just around the corner and anglers from across the country are gearing up for the competition.
For the month of October, the Destin harbor will be filled with charter and private boats aiming to catch the biggest fish during the 69th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo.
“We can’t believe we only have two months left for the tournament. Most of the charter and private boats are looking forward for the successful event,” said Helen Donaldson, the rodeo’s executive director. "We have gotten a few more charter boats that have pre-registered from the past events.”
So far, about 85 charter boats and two private boats have already registered for the Rodeo. Both of those numbers are about to get a lot bigger.
Donaldson said about 110 charter and 180 private boats are expected be registered by the time the tournament begins. About 50 boxes of T-shirts were delivered in the past week in preparation for the Rodeo.
“The day after Labor Day, we will set up a T-shirt trailer in front of the community center for about 10 days and then we will be at AJ’s (Seafood & Oyster Bar) selling our T-shirts there (during the Rodeo)," she said.
Donaldson said people traditionally stop and buy T-shirts when they see their trailer.
“It’s almost time to move back to the harbor.… It’s like moving back home,” she said.
