Gallons of gumbo and hundreds of hungry bellies filled up the Destin Community Center Saturday for the 6th annual Destin History and Fishing Museum’s Gumbo Contest and Silent Auction.
“Moneywise, this was our best event to date,” said Kathy Marler Blue, event organizer and museum associate director. “And it comes at a crucial time when many of the grant and governmental sources are declining.”
With the help of Pepsi, the Tourist Development Council and a grant for advertising, “we had more attendees to take advantage of the silent auction and enjoy gumbo.”
Nearly 500 people stopped by to taste-test gumbo from 26 individuals and 16 restaurants.
In addition to a strong “army of volunteers” and support from the museum board to help the event run smoothly, Marler Blue added that having the event in the Destin Community Center gym gave everyone a more positive experience.
