Winter Guests Concert Series

All winter guests and locals are invited to HarborWalk Village to enjoy a free concert with Chris Alvarado from 2-4 p.m. Jan. 5 on the Destin harbor. Concerts are free and open to the public.

Comedy competition

Crab Island Cantina presents “So You Think You’re Funny,” a comedy competition, at 6 p.m. every Sunday. Sign up at 5 p.m. Competition continues for 16 weeks. Comedians from all over the south will compete. First prize is a round trip for two to Los Angeles to perform at the Comedy Store on Sunset Strip. Call 321-230-0487.

Sunday Brunch at Harry T's

Harry T’s serves brunch on the harbor from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays beginning Jan. 5. items served include fresh fruit, a fresh bakery basket, and your choice of fried potato hash browns or cheese grits. Bottomless champagne with entrée purchase.

The Arts and Design Society, 17 First Street, SE in Fort Walton Beach, presents the works of Julia Allen, who works in pen and ink and in acrylics, in the studio windows facing First Street during January.

Americana Under The Stars

Lucky Mud hosts a family/pet friendly concert series, Americana Under the Stars, from 5-11 p.m. Thursdays in the amphitheater at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach. Open mic begins at 5 p.m. Bring a chair and beverage. Free admission into park and a suggested donation of $5 goes to the Friends of Topsail Hill.

Snowbird Movie Matinee

The Destin Library will host a free weekly movie matinee for winter visitors beginning at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 and continuing on Wednesdays through Feb. 12. The film series will feature new release DVD movies hyped as this year’s Oscar contenders. Seating will be limited to 30 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call 837-8572.

Dinner and a Movie

A full length classic movie shown on the courtyard wall while a four-course prix fixe dinner, inspired by the movie Maltese Falco, is served from 6:30-10 p.m. Jan 8 at Edward’s Fine Food & Wine, 66 Main St. in Rosemary Beach. Winter Guest Fest

The Winter Guest Fest, presented by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 10 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center Ballroom. Admission is $1. Once known as the Senior Snowbird Expo, the event is packed with coupons, giveaways and surprises for all. 

Destin Desserts

The Destin Desserts chefs’ competition takes place at 7 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Links Ballroom, Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach. Local chefs compete for the title of champion by creating original desserts using Girl Scout cookies as the main ingredient. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the evening includes social hour, heavy hors d'oeuvres, dessert tasting and voting, awards, silent auction and entertainment by Shades of Blue. Tickets are $25/person and available at each chef’s business, at any of the three Girl Scout Service Centers or call toll free 1-888-271-8778.

Independent Film Series

The Friends Guild of the Destin Library will sponsor the movie “Fruitvale Station,” an independent film biography/drama, at 4 p.m. Jan. 21. The program is free and open to the public. Films are unrated and directed toward mature audiences. Seating will be limited to 30 on a first-come, first-served basis.     

The film series replaces Foreign Film Night, although occasionally foreign films will be shown, and its goal is to provide area residents with the opportunity to view films that are in limited release and/or unlikely to be shown in local theaters.

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

New national and touring events on the 2014 schedule for the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at the Niceville campus of Northwest Florida State College begin at 7:30 p.m. in the mainstage theater.

• Jan. 21: Direct from Branson, Mo., comedian Jim Stafford and entertainer Moe Bandy appear for a heartwarming evening of country music and homespun humor.

• Feb. 5: Direct from Branson, the Acrobats of China.

• Feb. 12: The world famous Glen Miller Orchestra appears in concert to benefit the Niceville High School Band program.

• Feb. 28: “Generations: A Collection of Black American Music,” a regionally produced production, will be held during Black History Month.

• March 21: The national tour of the phenomenal “Lady Smith Black Mambazo” to benefit public broadcasting affiliate WUWF.

National touring Broadway shows include “Bring it On: The Musical” on Jan. 23 and the Tony Award winning “Memphis: The Musical” on Feb. 22, as well as the Las Vegas concert event “The Rat Pack Is Back” on March 8 to benefit the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra.

Sinfonia Gulf Coast

• Jan. 24: The Bernstein Beat concerts are hosted by Jamie Bernstein, daughter of conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein, and include a morning youth performance and an evening concert which includes Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.”

• Feb. 14, 15: Classical Connections at Rosemary Beach Town Hall features string quintet SYBARITE5.

• March 29: Sinfonia Gala features Patti LuPone in her Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda concert at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island. Cash bar available.

Glenn Miller Orchestra

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Mattie Kellie Arts Center, 100 College Blvd., Niceville. Tickets are $20. Advance tickets are available at the Mattie Kelly Arts Box office, www.mattiekellyartscenter.org or call 729-6000 or 888-838-2737.

This event is sponsored by the Niceville High School Band Program, and the NHS Big Band Jazz ensemble perform a song with the orchestra.
