With less than a month to go before the official end of the 2016-2017 Destin Snowbird season, club president Dean Harper said his group is moving full steam ahead with dozens of snowbird activities.

“We’ve had a big year, and of course we still have a few more items that we’ve been talking about, but it’s been exciting and it’s continuing,” he said.

So far, the total number of snowbirds registered in Destin is 2,020. Harper said the club surpassed 2,000 at last Tuesday’s meeting and hopes to top last year’s number of 2,068 by this week, the final week for registration.

“We still have one more registration and we’d be glad to have anybody else, even if they’re just getting in town,” Harper said. “It’s an $8 membership fee and that’s the best bargain in this part of the state.”

The Destin snowbirds have had a busy season so far, with weekly meetings surpassing 800 attendees and dozens of weekly clubs and activities, including poker, “Thank God It’s Tuesday” cocktail hours and a bowling club.

The group has several exciting events on the agenda for the next few weeks, including a sold-out snowbird fashion show sponsored by Chico’s on Feb. 20 and a Soundsations concert at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center in Niceville on Feb. 19. Tickets are $10.

After Tuesday's meeting, the snowbirds still have three meetings left, which are held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the “roost,” the Destin Community Center.

“March 7 is our last meeting, and it’s just a single meeting at 10 a.m.,” Harper said. “For our regular meetings though, we’re having good attendance and giving away lots of door prizes and having entertainment at each meeting. It’s been great.”
