Witness chased Eric John Gifford into wooded lot north of Mountain Drive and held him until deputies arrived.

A man who fled on foot from a four-car wreck but was chased down by a witness to the accident has landed in the Okaloosa County Jail on multiple charges.

According to a news release from Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, 36-year-old Eric John Gifford, address not reported, was involved in the wreck that occurred in the westbound lanes of Harbor Boulevard in Destin around 7 p.m. Saturday. After the accident, Gifford fled from his Toyota Tundra into a wooded lot north of Mountain Drive.

A witness to the accident, however, chased Gifford down and held him until OCSO deputies arrived on scene.

Once Gifford was being booked into the county jail, deputies found a small clear Ziploc baggie in his front jeans pocket. The powdery residue in the baggy tested positive for cocaine.

Gifford was charged, according to the Okaloosa County Jail website, with four counts of hit and run-leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, DUI with property damage and possession of drug equipment.
