The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners voted this week to sunset the Destin Executive Airport Compatibility Advisory Committee, which was recommended by the Okaloosa County Airports.

The committee, which was formed in February 2007, recommended solutions to issues relating to Destin Executive Airport’s compatibility, citizen noise complaints and any new projects needed on the property.

“As an advisory capacity they did what was needed,” said Okaloosa County Airports Director Tracy Stage. “All of their recommendations and involvement helped our process."

Stage said the committee had recommended to be sunset as their main objectives from the start, mitigating noise and building an air control tower, had been completed.

"Mission accomplished. They did an outstanding job,” Stage said.

The committee was composed of seven members appointed by the Destin City Council, Okaloosa County Commission and Eglin Air Force Base. The numerous discussion efforts resulted in $14 million in improvements to the airport, including the new noise wall and air traffic control tower.

Jan Barr, who was a committee member appointed by the City Council, said she was very grateful for all of the work the Airports Department has put in to accomplish and finish the two major projects.

“We were committed to make these projects a reality,” Barr said. “We live extraordinary close to an operational aircraft airport and something needed to happen. …We really appreciate what they have done.”

Chad Rogers, the property manager for Okaloosa County Airports, said if there’s a need in the future to bring  the committee back and help advocate projects then they will do so.

“If they need us in the future again, then they can count on us. … They really delivered for us,” Barr said
