DESTIN — Deputies responding to complaints about an angry customer at a local restaurant arrived to find the man lying on the floor of the business snoring.
Employees told the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies that he had a knife in his hand.
When the 46-year-old Pace man, rolled over, they saw he was clutching a steak knife and a fork in his right hand, according to his OCSO arrest report.
The call came in to the Sheriff’s Office at about 5:30 on a Tuesday afternoon.
Employees said the suspect had paid his tab, but was angry about an “insult” and was yelling at another customer, his report said.
A victim told deputies that the suspect had approached him from behind and put a knife to the right side of his throat, the report said.
A witness said the victim had politely asked the suspect to stop butting into his conversation, after which he told the bartender he’d like to rip the victim’s head off, the report said.
After the suspect put a knife to the victim’s throat, the witness put him in a “sleeper hold,” the report said.
Another witness also tackled the suspect.
An employee told deputies that when the suspect asked for his check, he told her that he was going to rip out someone’s throat for being rude to him. He then put his knife and fork to the victim’s throat, she said. He also pulled the victim from his bar chair.
The suspect told deputies he couldn’t recall what had happened but admitted he’d been drinking alcohol.
He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery and disorderly conduct for the May 23 incident.
