At a national retail real estate conference in Las Vegas last month, Destin Commons was the International Council of Shopping Centers Foundation's recipient of the Southern Region and Overall U.S. Community Support Award for their Coins For A Cause initiative.

Shopping centers play an integral role to the social, civic and economic vibrancy to the communities they serve. The ICSC Foundation’s Community Support Awards highlight the social aspect of the industry, showcasing the country’s premier examples of corporate social responsibility and community outreach conducted by shopping centers, their management companies, and developers. In addition to Coins For A Cause, the center’s management staff plays an integral role in the community by serving on a number of boards.

Coins for a Cause is a simple concept, collecting coins from premium parking meters around the shopping center, and then donating the money to local non-profit organizations in the Destin area. Last year alone, Destin Commons partnered with 26 local non-profit organizations for this philanthropic program that has donated $1.2 million since its inception 10 years ago. Turnberry Associates, the ownership and managing partner of Destin Commons, maintains an active and involved role in philanthropic endeavors with all their corporate residential, retail, hospitality and commercial holdings around the country.

Heather Ruiz, director of marketing for Destin Commons, accepted the award.

“We were so proud to receive this national level award, but more importantly, Coins For A Cause represents working with and helping our charity partners that enrich the Northwest Florida community in so many ways," she said. "Our non-profit partners support many causes such as promoting health and wellness, adults and children with special needs, wounded warriors, arts and culture, children in need, animal welfare and life enrichment."
