Giselle

One of the oldest continually performed ballets dating back to Paris in 1841, "Giselle" will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Grand Park at Sandestin’s Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach. Event is free. "Giselle" is presented as part of Grand Boulevard’s Coastal Culture series, made possible by the Grand Boulevard Arts & Entertainment Program.

Staged by Marius Petipa, "Giselle" tells the story of a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after discovering Albrecht, her lover, is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. They target her lover for death, but Giselle’s great love frees him from their grasp. Led by Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis, they gain their power in numbers as they effortlessly move through dramatic patterns and synchronized movements, and control the stage with their long tulle dresses and stoic expressions. Giselle finds forgiveness in her heart for Albrecht, but she knows the Wilis will not do the same.

The Nutcracker

Based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice,” NFB produces the only full-length production with professional dancers of the classic holiday ballet in the area. The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Tickets are $38/adults and $18/children 12 and under. VIP reception tickets are $25 per person.

In its 38th year, "The Nutcracker" is set in a small German town in 1835 to the music of Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky with choreography by celebrated Artistic Director Todd Eric Allen. All public performances will feature live music performed by the Northwest Florida Ballet Symphony Orchestra led by David Ott.
