Fund Raising Night
A fundraiser will be held for Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center’s Eating For Advocacy program from 4-8 p.m. July 31 at Panera Bread in Destin Commons. The restaurant will donate a portion of their proceeds to ECCAC. The Andrew Weathers Memorial Foundation will host its annual fundraising run at 8 a.m. Sept. 30 at The Crab Trap in Destin. This year’s run will include a beach 5k as well as a fun run and obstacle course for kids. The after party and silent auction will follow the timed run including drinks and The Crab Trap’s signature jambalaya. Early registration is $30/runner before Aug. 1 and $45/runner after. The 2017 “Never Forget Run” will begin with an Honor and Remember Ceremony, offering a way for the community to pay respects to the Special Forces soldiers who have given their life for our country including Andrew, who gave his life for our freedom on Sept. 30, 2014. American flags will be offered to runners to wave as they run the beaches of the Emerald Coast.
H2O for Heroes
Firehouse Subs will help local first responders beat the heat during its sixth annual H2O for Heroes bottled water collection drive Aug. 5 at all Firehouse Subs locations in Destin. Each guest will receive a medium sub when they donate an unopened, 24-pack of bottled water. The donated water will be distributed to local fire departments, first responder agencies and community centers — aiding children, the elderly and those in need of water during the scorching summer months when dehydration and other heat-related illnesses are most threatening.

Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast will hold a free, community nutrition class, “Superfoods for a Super You,” from 12-1 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Suite 3 Conference Room at the hospital. A workshop to assist students in Okaloosa County High Schools who will take the Aug. 26 SAT and Sept. 9 ACT will be held from 2:15-4:15 p.m. Aug. 22-24 and 28-30 in the Media Center at Fort Walton Beach High School. Town Hall Meeting
The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County will hold a town hall meeting to present its findings in the Community Health Assessment from 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Destin Community Center. The CHA makes health comparisons of Okaloosa residents to residents throughout the state and even the nation, in some instances.
Tai Chi Class
The Destin Library will offer one-hour Tai Chi classes with Barbara Rezmer, a certified Tai Chi for Health instructor, Monday mornings at 9 a.m. The cost is $5/session. The Destin Library's Code Club, dedicated to enhancing the programming and coding education of today’s youth by providing free programming materials to schools and libraries, is open to children in fifth through eighth grades. The Destin History & Fishing Museum has set up a temporary exhibit “Talking Smack” that will run until Aug. 31. The exhibit details the two-masted schooners that formed the red snapper fishing fleets in the Northwest Florida waterfronts. The sailing vessels were often refereed to as “smacks.”
Kiwanis Club of Destin
