An unusual incident closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Exit 45 (Holt) early in the morning Friday.
Florida Highway Patrol reported that a 2017 Kenworth dump truck driven by 54-year-old Scott Stpierre of Cantonment was traveling east on I-10 at 2 a.m. Friday when the bed of the truck, which was vertical in position, struck the side of the bridge at the Wilkerson Bluff Road overpass.
After the raised bed struck the bridge, it detached and became embedded in the roadway and into the side/underside of the bridge.
Eastbound traffic on I-10 was diverted via the Holt exit to U.S. Highway 90 creating a major traffic issue later in the day. Westbound I-10 traffic was not affected. The overpass on Wilkerson Bluff Road was also closed due to bridge damage, creating another traffic issue that was experienced by motorists throughout the day.
Eastbound traffic on I-10 did not reopen until just before noon.
FHP noted in the release that alcohol was not related to the crash and Stpierre was cited for failure to use due care.
