When one of Ruth’s Chris Steak House’s own is in need, the restaurant puts in all the efforts to bring the community together to help out.
Beverage Manager Skot Harville’s wife, Brenda, was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer on May 4. She has gone through four rounds of chemotherapy and will soon start radiation therapy for about five and a half weeks.
“Doctors said that she will be cured of cancer, but she will have to get a PET scan twice a year for the rest of her life,” said Skot, who has been part of the restaurant’s family since they opened their doors in 2006.
On Tuesday, Ruth’s Chris Steak House invited the community, loyal patrons and guests to a fundraiser for the Harvilles. Attendees enjoyed complimentary hors d’ oeuvres, live and silent auctions and live music by artist Michael J Thomas. All proceeds benefited medical cost for Brenda’s treatment.
“It has been very overwhelming with the outpouring and generosity. There are a lot of good people in Destin,” Skot said. “They really come together when something is put in front of them.”
“(Skot and Brenda) are hardworking people and I want to take care of them,” added Mike Sable, the restaurant’s general manager. “They have had so much happen to them and no one can afford that.”
Stable said he is just thankful that the community came out to help.
“I know that every little bit counts,” he said.
Brenda said she feels really blessed for Mike’s generosity, adding that it’s something he would typically do for his employees.
“It has been hard at times, but you just need to keep pressing on and don’t let this keep you down,” she said. “I am going to beat this.”
Brenda said she has so much to look forward to with family and friends.
“I’m really hoping to get back to work. Doctors told me that I can go back during radiation therapy, but just don’t over do it,” she said.
Brenda hopes fundraisers like this will help bring more awareness of the different types of cancer people can get diagnosed with.
“If you do get diagnosed, there is help out there. You are not alone,” she said.
A GoFundMe account has been created for the Harvilles and donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/hope-fight-believe. Donations may also be dropped off at Ruth’s Chris Steak’s House at Silver Shells Resort, located at 15000 Emerald Coast Parkway.
