"About an hour ago we had to cancel it. It's heartbreaking. Everybody's heartbroken."
The storm system brewing in the Caribbean has prompted organizers to cancel this weekend's Destin Seafood Festival.
"About an hour ago we had to cancel it," festival Chairwoman Jaime Jones said shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday. "It's heartbreaking. Everybody's heartbroken."
The news was posted on social media and hundreds of vendors, entertainers and others associated with the event were being notified Wednesday night, Jones said.
The potential liability to keep the festival on schedule was not worth the risk, she said. "This is to try to keep everybody safe."
The time and effort needed to organize the annual event makes it "very, very unlikely" it can be rescheduled this year, she added.
This is the second time in five years that weather has washed out the Seafood Festival. It was canceled in 2013 because of the threat from Tropical Storm Karen.
