The Destin Library will host a series of innovative workshops aimed at middle school students who are aspiring writers beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7. Registrations will be limited so as to facilitate program quality.
Poetry Is Courageous: Silencing Doubts, As Our Hearts Speak Out is the creation of local poet Kerrian Harris, who has offered to lead the six-session program during November and December. A culminating “Poem Concert” for parents and friends has been scheduled for December.
During the workshops, Nov. 7, 14, 21, Dec. 5 and 12, which are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6-7 p.m., young writers will engage in a variety of activities designed to inspire creativity, gain understanding of written form, “speak” from one's heart, develop greater confidence in public speaking and practice the art of poetic delivery.
Harris is a 27-year-old hospitality and tourism degree graduate who has a passion for the art of poetry. Through poetry and short stories, she has found her voice and has been able to express her hidden inner most thoughts. She believes that many young adults can find solace in practicing poetry which will enable them to release their feelings and emotions.
