Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer may be over for many northerners, but the fun is just about to begin. Soon The “Roost” will be opening for the 38th official season of the Destin Snowbirds.

The 2017-2018 president, Charles Cassell has been here since early October making sure that everything that needs to be ready is ready. For instance, more than 200 of the area’s finest businesses, restaurants and organizations donate gifts for the weekly prize drawings. Charles has been working with the prize committee to make sure there are plenty of early-bird snowbirds to collect those donations. He has also been contacting each entertainer who has agreed to perform at a weekly meeting to verify their commitment. Finally, he is making sure that everything is set for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the official opening of The Roost.

The Snowbird Roost is at the Destin Community Center, 101 Stahlman Avenue. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Monday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. with registration immediately following the ceremony and lasting until 3 p.m. Storage lockers will be available for pick-ups from 2-3 p.m. Locker pick-up will also be available Saturday, Nov. 18.

The first snowbird meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m. at The Roost. Kim Cannon, minister of music and worship at Destin United Methodist Church, will return as our opening entertainer. Pastor Cannon’s impressive profile includes providing musical programs for many Congressional events in Washington D.C. and performing at the White House on multiple occasions.

One well-known face that won’t be present this year is that of Kitty Mauzy, representative of BBVA Compass Bank. Kitty has been a weekly fixture at the snowbird meetings since 2011, but after 30 years of service at the bank, Kitty has retired to her cabin in Elijah, Georgia. However, Branch Executive Susan Ledford will attend the meetings until Kitty’s replacement, Jamie Williamson, is ready to step in. BBVA Compass’ “Compass for Your Cause” program has supported snowbird causes since 2011, and will still be available for every snowbird who opens an account. Susan will explain the program in more detail at the weekly meetings.
