SANTA ROSA BEACH — For the 8th consecutive year the South Walton Fire District will be offering “free transportation” to local residents in skilled nursing and adult living facilities.
The "Home for the Holidays" program provides residents an opportunity to be at home with family members to celebrate the holidays. SWFD will provide transportation on Thanksgiving Eve or Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve or Christmas Day only, from the hours of 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on a space available basis.
The program began in 2009, said Sammy Sanchez, public information officer for SWFD. Rides are available originating in South Walton and ending in Walton County or within the Destin City limits.
"This is a free program for anyone who doesn't have the means to get their loved ones home for Thanksgiving or Christmas," Sanchez said.
While the program has not a lot of takers over the years, without a public transportation system in Walton County, SWFD fills in the gap during the holiday season.
"When people think about South Walton, they think it's an affluent community, but there are needs just like any other," he said. "That's why this program was put together."
Any request for Thanksgiving Holiday transportation must be received by Monday, Nov. 20. Any request for Christmas Holiday transportation request must be received by Monday, Dec. 18.
Anyone needing additional information or that would like to schedule transportation, please call The South Walton Fire District Communications Center at 267-0167.
