The Destin History and Fishing Museum held their 12th annual Gumbo Contest and Silent Auction Saturday at the Destin Community Center.

This event marked the museum’s most successful fundraising event. This event is the museum’s main fundraiser. Nearly 625 attended the popular event.

Ticket holders enjoyed a Silent Auction with 154 bid packages, live music by Flash Flood, and gumbo from local contestants. There were 15 restaurants and 13 individuals registered in the event.

The competition was very close and the winners were:

• Individual Category First Place: Lori Burkart

• Individual Category Second Place: William Dale Braddock

• Individual Category Third Place: Tom Ogle

Judging was equally close in the restaurant division.

• Restaurant Category First Place: Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer

• Restaurant Category Second Place: Jimmy Buffet’s Margaretville

• Restaurant Category Third Place: Grande Vista Bar & Grille

The People’s Choice Restaurant Award voted on by the day’s gumbo samplers was Dewey Destin’s Bayside. The People’s Choice Individual Award voted on by the day’s gumbo samplers was Kelly Anderson.

The museum is very thankful to sponsors Okaloosa County TDC, Copy Systems, Pepsi, and DoNut Hole for their financial and in-kind donations and most appreciative to all that supported this fundraising event by their donations or participation.

Celebrity judges for this year's contest were Glenda Jernigan, Bruce Craul/HarborWalk Village, J.D. Peacock/ County Clerk, and Casey Jones/The Big Red Truck for the Individual Category. Judges for the Restaurant Category were Dale Martinez, Sam Seevers from Life’s A Beach, and Capt. Charlie Nix with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Matt Ronk, the boat builder who restored the Primrose.

Proceeds from this event will help pay for the upkeep and expansion of museum programs and exhibits.
