In a track meet with Ruckel and Davidson, the Destin Middle School girls took first place, while the Destin boys finished second overall.

“Ruckel is always a fierce competitor, and our athletes had to fight for their events and points,” said Destin Coach Tina Barron, who coaches the teams along with Coach Demetrius Stevens. “Our boys and girl pushed themselves, and really pulled together as a team for this win. Overall I am incredibly proud of how we are progressing this season, gaining speed and strength, improving performance and refining technique. We have a very talented and passionate group of athletes, which makes our job much easier.”

The Destin girls earned eight first place finishes.

Shakirah Williams took first in the long jump with a leap of 14-3.5.

Taylor Flint won the 100 dash with a 13.06 mark.

Sophie Kellogg took first in the mile at 6:04 and first in the 800 meter dash.

The team of Flint, Kendall Hewitt, Phoebe Fortenberry and Williams took first in the 4x100.

Ashlyn Fernandez took first in the 200 meter at 29.19.

Hollyn Cate Henderson, Hannah Blanton, Williams and Lexi Roberts teamed up to win the Sprint Medley. Roberts sprinted to pass and beat Ruckel’s anchor for the win.

Flint, Ashlyn Fernandez, Kida Bailey and Abigail Kline took first in the 4x400.

Other Destin girls placing were as follows:

Discus – Mariah Manthey, second, 87-9.5; Flint, third, 83-3.75.

Shot put – Vivian Natonio, third, 26-9.

Long jump – Sara Crews, third, 13-1.

100 dash – Kendall Hewitt, third, 13.46.

Mile – Nia Madrigal, fourth, 6:14.

400 meter run – Abigail Kline, second, 1:06; Bailey, third (timer glitched).

200 meter run – Phoebe Fortenberry, second, 29.8.

800 meter run – Amelia Kline, second, 2:44.41; Crews, third, 2:45.26.

As for the Destin boys, they reeled in seven first place finishes.

Ryan Driscoll took first in the discus at 121-7.75.

Spencer MacKenzie earned first in the shot put with a throw of 36-11.5.

Tabious Thompson took first in the long jump with a leap of 16-10.5.

Michael O’Leary took first in the mile at 5:08 and first in the 800 meter at 2:21.

Thompson, Anthony Ordonez, Will Bevenour and Antwone Walker teamed up to take first in the 4x100.

Ordonez, Maddax Fayard, Bevenour and O’Leary took first in the 4x400.

Other Destin boys placing were as follows:

Discus – MacKenzie, second, 119-5; Massimo Grisotto, third, 107-5.5.

Shot put – Cameron Rojik, fourth, 35-11.

Long jump – Rojik, third, 15-4.

100 dash – Walker, third, 13.25; Thompson, fourth, 13.37.

400 meter run – Fayard, fourth, 1:01.48.

200 meter run – Bevenour, third, 26.6; Ordonez, fourth, 26.82.

Up next for the Destin track teams is a meet on April 4 at 4 p.m. at Fort Walton Beach High School. Destin will compete against Bruner and Liza Jackson.
