The Destin Marlins delivered a 10-4 victory Wednesday afternoon over the visiting Davidson Panthers in middle school girls softball.
“The game was great. It was slow starting out but they pulled it together,” said Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon.
“And Ava (Smith) did an amazing job on the mound like always,” she added.
Smith went the distance in the pitching circle striking out eight and giving up only three hits.
“Our defense worked and our hitting was working as well,” Cahoon said.
Leading the Marlins at bat was Samantha Sherer with a double and a triple for three RBIs and two stolen bases. Brody Hlavaty hit two singles for an RBI, while Smith hit a double for three RBIs, and Allison McCraw hit a single.
Davidson scored one run in the first inning and Destin answered with two.
In the second, Destin sat Davidson down on two pop flies and a strikeout.
Destin scored one run in the bottom half. With two outs, McCraw reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double from Sherer.
In the top of the third, Davidson scored one unearned run.
In the bottom half, Destin’s Smith walked and scored on a hit from Hlavaty for a 4-2 lead.
The next couple of innings were scoreless for both teams.
Destin finally got things rolling again in the bottom of the sixth scoring six runs on four hits. McCraw and Hlavaty each singled, Sherer tripled and Smith cracked out a double.
Davidson scored two last runs in the top of the seventh.
Up next for Destin is a 4:30 p.m. game Wednesday at Pryor Middle School in Fort Walton Beach.
