The search is on for a new library director after Jurate Burns officially retired last week.
The job description has been removed from Destin's website as Human Resources and Risk Manager Director Karen Jankowski plans to begin the interview process next week.
According to Jankowski, 21 people have applied for the position and six of them will move forward with interviews next week.
It’s anticipated the city will offer the position to one of the candidates in early June with an annual salary of $68,300.
The job description on the website said the city is searching for someone who is "highly responsible and professional, administrative, technical library skills, great customer service, strategic leadership, long-range planning and growth."
Kitti Capps, the library's circulation desk supervisor, is serving as the interim library director until a decision is made.
The library director position ultimately is selected by the city manager and then confirmed by the City Council. That is the same process for other department heads.
"With the recently vacated shoes of Ms. Burns, the city is moving forward with the difficult tasking of hiring a new library director," Jankowski said in an email. "The library plays an important role in the community, staying fresh and modern with ever-changing technology. Our goal is to keep up this momentum. Strategic planning for the future of the city’s resources and facilities is a must. With that, the most important aspect or quality to continue is the high level of customer service provided."
