Maggie White has a personality that can fill a room, and that is exactly why she said she is so comfortable behind the bar at the new Slick Lips Seafood & Oyster Bar at the Baytowne Wharf.
“I really like making people drinks and entertaining 12 different people at once. It’s fun,” she said. “You make a good drink and everybody’s talking about it – I like doing it all.”
White said she has been in the restaurant industry for nine years and bartending since she was 21, and for her, the craft cocktail scene is really where it’s at.
“I’m intrigued with making drinks,” she said. “In this area, everyone wanted rum runners and frozen daiquiris, so craft cocktails, at first it was hard to get people to drink them, but now that craft cocktails are in, it’s fun!”
When it comes to her spirit of choice, White said she can’t refuse a good gin cocktail.
“Gin is in,” she said. “Everyone is always so ‘eh’ about gin, but I think it’s great — especially in this area — it’s really refreshing and great with St. Germaine’s Elderflower Liqueur.”
As for her signature sip, White actually chose a wine-inspired cocktail, the 50 Shades of Rose’.
“I chose the 50 Shades of Rose’ because it’s the prettiest and the tastiest,” she said. “It’s very popular, especially with the women. We use steeped rose petals for rose cordial, and sprinkle rose petals on the top, and we top it all off with Bezinger Rose’. We also use Three Olives Rose’ Vodka, and at first I was like, ‘Rose’ vodka?’ but it’s actually really good!”
When it comes to her own free time, White said, she likes to hit the beach just like her customers who come to Destin to vacation.
“I live here because we live on vacation,” she said. “I like to go to the beach and go paddleboarding. Anytime I’m off, that’s where I’m going.”
