DESTIN — Officials say that nearly 3,000 gallons of treated wastewater reached a wetlands area overnight.

The spill, which is estimated to top 161,000 gallons, began sometime between Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. A Destin Water Users operator discovered the spill at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a Florida Department of Environmental Protection notice.

It happened at the end of Industrial Park Lane, the release said.

It was caused by construction debris partially blocking a main line, which caused the treated wastewater to overflow. Most went into onsite storm water ponds, but about 2,800 gallons is believed to have entered a wetland.
