Lynda Penry gave a plant diseases lecture for members and guests of Destin Garden Club at their June meeting. Penry is the current president of Garnier Beach Garden Club, a past president of Okaloosa County Master Gardeners, and calls herself a "lifelong learner.” Being an Okaloosa County Master Gardener allows Penry to not only continue to learn, but also to share her knowledge with others.

Destin Garden Club also awarded their $1,000 Horticultural Scholarship to Matt Steele, who plans to pursue an associate of science degree in plant science and agricultural technology at Valencia College in Orlando in the fall.

The Destin Garden Club is dedicated to enriching its membership and the public with gardening awareness and education. The object of the club is to stimulate the love of gardening among members; to promote gardening through community projects; to aid in the protection of birds, trees, shrubs and flowers; to encourage city beautification and to share with members and others the fruit of our studies.

The club meetings are always held the second Tuesday of each month. The club will not meet during the summer months of July and August. The club meets at the Destin Library, 150 Sibert Ave. Club members also meet to plant and maintain the landscape beds at the Destin Library on the third Tuesday of each month throughout the year.

For those wishing to join the club, membership is available for $35 a year. This entitles members to special luncheons, garden tours and bus trips. For information about the club, call 660-341-8900.
