Breakfast is the meal of champions, or at least that’s what I was told as a kid.
Growing up I never took to traditional breakfast foods, but as an adult there is always something so familiar about a good cheesy omelet, a fluffy pancake and the smell of bacon wafting through the air.
Crackings, the newest breakfast spot in Destin, recently transitioned from its former life as Another Broken Egg, and I would say it has done that seamlessly, but I’ll let the food do the talking.
There are so many options at Crackings that it was a bit overwhelming to decided what to order. My guest and I chose a selection from The Lighter Side section of the menu for our appetizer, the Avocado Flats.
The appetizer featured multi-grain bread topped with fresh avocado, cherry tomatoes, basil and balsamic glaze. It was delicious.
For our entrees, I chose to go with a Crackings signature dish, The Captain’s Course Omelet. This breakfast choice involved a full-skillet omelet filled with avocado, tomatoes, roasted garlic, green onions, cream cheese and lobster. It also came with potatoes and a toasted English muffin. Let me just say, it was the best omelet I’ve ever eaten!
Not only were the eggs cooked to perfection, but also the combination of flavorful toppings was amazing. The creamy lobster and the toasted garlic cloves made for a perfect start to my day.
As for my guest, he ordered The Out West Scramble. This was also served in a ceramic skillet and featured scrambled eggs, onions, chilies, chorizo, avocado, tomatoes, black beans and cheddar-jack cheese with a side of potatoes and tortillas.
My guest was blown away and kept mentioning how good the meal was. We were both so full that we took half of our food home to enjoy later.
There are not traditional desserts on the menu, but for those with a sweet tooth there is a section of the menu called Sweet Appeals that includes waffles, French toast, pancakes, bananas foster and a Crackings special called tiramisu French toast. I’ll have to go back some time to try that one, because this time around I was too full to eat another bite.
I also must add that our pint-sized guest ordered a pancake meal from the kid's menu that came with three small pancakes and your choice of bacon or eggs, and he amazed us by eating quite a bit of both the miniature pancakes and the scrambled eggs. He even branched out and stole some potatoes from my plate and munched them without complaining. So I'd say Crackings is kid-approved.
The service at Crackings was excellent. We were seated and promptly brought our drink choice of a steaming cup of coffee in a custom Crackings mug. Our meal came out quickly and our server checked on us often.
The dining room is reminiscent of a grandmother’s kitchen with its drapes in the entry, rooster motif throughout and traditional place settings. I would call it traditionally cozy.
If you have visited before in the restaurant’s former life as Another Broken Egg, you will see that not much has changed.
A FINAL TASTE
Crackings is definitely a new favorite on my breakfast and brunch list.
It should be noted there are also lunch items available such as burgers, quesadillas and salads, and for those looking for a true brunch vibe, Crackings offers mimosas, bloody Marys and beer.
I’m already planning my next visit when family comes to town.
