DESTIN — Chelsea Pettis sat with her pups Aspen and Lulu on the patio of World of Beer on a recent Thursday, waiting for what she called the "family dinner" to be served.
The World of Beer, located in the Destin Commons, is one of a few restaurants in Northwest Florida that offer menus just for dogs. Pettis, an employee of World of Beer who went to enjoy the restaurant with co-workers on her day off, said she loves working in a restaurant that is so accepting and accommodating of canines.
"It can almost be discriminatory to tell somebody that 'Oh you can come in, but I'm sorry that you can't bring your family member,'" Pettis said. "Dogs want to go out and have fun, too. They love going for rides in the car and it's good to have this option."
The World of Beer currently serves $2 rice bowls for dogs, with an add-on of grilled chicken or steak for $3.
Harry T’s Lighthouse, located in HarborWalk Village, was the first business in Destin to be officially approved for “doggy dining” by the City Council. Restaurants in the area, like Hammerhead's Bar and Grille, Burrito Del Sol and Props Craft Brewery, soon followed and began offering outside seating for dog and human diners.
David Coffin, general manager of World of Beer, said their restaurant plans to expand their dog-friendly dining even further. Coffin said the restaurant will soon add a non-alcoholic beer for the pups and, hopefully, introduce more options to the dog menu.
"We want to make sure we're offering a healthy option," Coffin said. "People are not only particular about what they eat, but they are especially particular about what their animals eat."
Coffin, who chose to work at World of Beer because of its dog-friendly policy, said allowing customers to bring their dogs makes the restaurant environment feel more like home.
The Marina Bar & Grill, located in Baytowne Wharf in Miramar Beach, is yet another eatery that prides itself on being "as dog friendly as it gets."
Currently served at the Marina Bar & Grill is: the Yap-A-Tizer, a $1 dog biscuit; a Dog Dog, a $3 hot dog; and a Puppy Patty, a $5 hamburger. Chris Lane, the front-of-house lead at the Marina Bar & Grill, said the dog menu was started by the restaurant's former manager as a passion project.
"We have a lot of locals that live on the resort year round," Lane said. "I think they really appreciate having a place to bring their dogs because they are a part of the family. You want to be able to order something for your family, and the dogs just love it."
Here is a list of just some of the dog-friendly restaurants in Northwest Florida:
Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House (Destin): Boshamps has a dog as its logo, so it’s no surprise that this popular bar and restaurant is very dog-friendly. Boshamps has treats available in the front of the restaurant so your pup doesn't feel left out during the meal. That’s something to bark about!
Burrito Del Sol (Destin and Fort Walton Beach): This locally owned restaurant, located in Fort Walton Beach and Destin, offers pet-friendly outdoor seating for dogs and their human counterparts.
Captain Dave's on the Gulf (Destin): Customers can enjoy outside seating with their dogs at Captain Dave's. No dog food or water bowls are provided.
Hammerhead's Bar and Grille (Destin): Although this dog-friendly restaurant does not have an official dog menu, customers can request a $6 bowl of hamburger patties, hot dogs or chicken breasts.
Harry T's Lighthouse (Destin): Harry T’s, located in Harborwalk Village, was the first business in Destin to be officially approved for “doggie dining” by the City Council. Customers can enjoy outside seating with their dogs and treats and water bowls are provided.
Props Craft Brewery (Fort Walton Beach): Dogs are welcome to join their owners for a craft beer at Props Craft Brewery. Servers offer water bowls and will even bring by some treats so the pups never feel left out.
Starbucks (several locations): If you've got your furry family member along on your next Starbucks run, order the Puppuccino. One of the items on the Starbucks secret menu, the Puppuccino is a small cup filled with whipped cream for your dog to enjoy.
The Other End Restaurant and Beer Garden (Destin): This hip, open-air harbor spot is a favorite among locals, especially those who enjoy dining alongside their dogs. The restaurant serves burgers and brats out of an Airstream trailer, and all seating is outside picnic tables and deck tables surrounded by shrubs and citrus trees. Water bowls are provided to the doggy diners whenever they get thirsty.
