Beginning Tuesday, Henderson Beach Drive, from the north side of the U.S. 98 intersection to the entrance of the Walmart shopping center, will be temporarily closed.
According to a press release from the Florida Department of Transportation, the road will be closed for several months while crews adjust the elevation of the intersection of Henderson Beach Drive and U.S. 98. Westbound drivers on U.S. 98 destined for Henderson Beach Drive, will be detoured to Commons Drive via Triumph Drive. Eastbound traffic destined for Henderson Beach Drive, will be detoured via Indian Bayou Trail.
The entrance to Henderson Beach State Park on the south side of U.S. 98 will remain open.
Detour signs and variable message boards will be in place to help direct traffic.
The road work is part of the $33.5 million U.S. 98 widening project that is expanding the highway from four to six travel lanes between Airport Road and the Okaloosa/Walton County Line. Project completion is currently scheduled for early 2021.
All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
