FORT WALTON BEACH – Okaloosa County’s public schools will close Tuesday, on the advice of county emergency management officials and guidance from the National Weather Service, as Tropical Storm Gordon moves near the area, according to Superintendent May Beth Jackson.

All other school activities scheduled for Tuesday are canceled as well, according to an announcement from school district officials.

The approaching storm, which is expected to make landfall sometime Tuesday evening along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and could be at hurricane strength by that time, is also prompting a schedule change for Santa Rosa County’s public schools.

Santa Rosa County’s public schools will be dismissing students early on Tuesday, according to an announcement from Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick.

“After consulting with Santa Rosa County Emergency Operations Center we will dismiss school early on Tuesday and school will resume on Wednesday,” Wyrosdick said.

Parents can find their students’ dismissal time online at https://sites.santarosa.k12.fl.us/files/startdismiss.pdf.

“In addition, all after school activities will be cancelled for Tuesday evening,” Wyrosdick said. “Any additional advisories will be distributed through local media and through Santa Rosa Facebook and Twitter.”

Meanwhile, Walton County schools will operate on a normal schedule Tuesday, according to the school district's website. District officials are continuing to work with emergency management personnel and will communicate any schedule changes, according to the website.

In consideration of the storm and surrounding school district closings, all classes and administrative operations are cancelled at all locations of Northwest Florida State College on Tuesday due to weather advisories. This cancellation includes all athletics, arts and student activities.

The college said it made this decision based on its commitment to the safety of our faculty, staff and students.

Further information regarding operations for Wednesday will be made available mid-day Tuesday. Please stay tuned to NWF State College’s website at www.nwfsc.edu for further information.
