FORT WALTON BEACH — Legendary Marine on Miracle Strip Parkway towed the last of its boats away Wednesday following the owner's decision to close the location after 5 years in business.
Ken Johnson, service manager at the Fort Walton Beach Legendary Marine location, said the decision was made to close the marina after local businessman Jayme Nabors bought the property. Johnson said Nabors tried to raise the rent from $5,000 or $6,000 a month to about $20,000.
"We were doing really good here," Johnson said. "The docks were a little run down, though."
Legendary Marine, which has locations in Destin, Panama City Beach, Pensacola, Sandestin and Gulf Shores, Alabama, is a full-service marina offering boat repairs, storage and sales.
In a statement given to the Daily News Friday, Nabors said in the long-term interests of the property and community, he felt it was necessary to go in a different direction than the current tenant. Nabors said he's planning to upgrade the facility, although he didn't have any specific details.
"In our opinion, there is plenty of opportunity for improvement," Nabors said in the statement. "We will provide more details as we progress."
Johnson said all of Legendary Marine's Fort Walton Beach employees were transferred to other locations.
There are no current plans, Johnson said, to open another marina in Fort Walton Beach.
