Okaloosa Regional Airport now Northwest Florida Regional Airport
On September 2, 2008, the Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to change the Okaloosa Regional Airport to the Northwest Florida Regional Airport. The airport provides service to many communities throughout the region and the nomenclature has often confused travelers. “A self-descriptive geographic reference that better encompasses the Airport’s mission and location has been sought and we believe that Northwest Florida better identifies the airport’s geographic location to out-of-state travelers,” said Airport Director Greg Donovan. The three-digit airport code VPS will remain unchanged.
The new name will take effect immediately; however, the expense in changing the name on stationary, signage, etc will be gradual as materials are expended. The entire cost of this transition is paid through airport funds. The Northwest Florida Regional Airport will continue to be owned and operated by Okaloosa County and is not dependent upon ad valorem taxes.
The Airport currently has five (5) airlines providing non-stop service for 811,000 annual passengers to six (6) destinations. In July the Airport enjoyed a 6 percent increase in the number of passengers as compared to the following year. For further information please contact the Airport at (850) 651-7160, extension 4 or visit our website at www.FlyVPS.com.
