From a truckload of stinking fish to blocking the pass, anglers plan protest after feds lock down amberjack

First the red snapper, now the amberjack.

“Enough is enough,” said Destin Charter Boat Association President Scott Robson to the more than 60 captains, wives and deckhands gathered at the Fisherman’s Co-op Thursday afternoon.

In mid-August, federal regulators shut down the red snapper fishery on the grounds that there is a shortage. Earlier this week the National Marine Fisheries announced that the recreational fishery for greater amberjack in federal waters will be closed starting today. Again, their reasoning is the quota of 1.368 million pounds of amberjack has been met and they don’t want it overfished.

The first gut reaction of some of the captains was to blockade the channel today from about 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. — and to alert the media in hopes of getting the word out that they’ve had their fill of Big Brother cutting in to their business.

“Whatever we do, we have to stand united,” Robson said.

“I truly believe the blockade is the wrong way to go,” said Capt. George Eller of the Checkmate, noting that route could be illegal.

“What we want is publicity,” he said, and on a national level.

Eller’s suggestion was to pick out a day and go as a group and blockade the doors of the National Marine Fisheries office with a peaceful assembly.

“That will get national attention,” Eller said.

“How do we make a statement and let them know that we’re not going to stand for it anymore?” Robson said.
“Now is the time to show ... enough is enough. And hey — you’re putting us out of business,” Robson said.

“I saw this coming a long time ago,” added Capt. Brant Kelly of the Relentless. “It’s just another nail in the coffin.”

“We’re trying to get their attention,” he said, but we don’t want to “look like idiots.

“If you really want people to hear you, you’ve got to plan. We need big media, big news to get it done. I want to really make a statement ... have a real audience when this thing happens,” Kelly said.
Destin Mayor Craig Barker was also at the meeting and said the message he has heard since day one is — “The data is flawed.”

The data that the federal regulators have accumulated is distorted.

“They are taking away your right to make a living,” Barker said. “And you have the right to a peaceful assembly.”

“But this needs to be bigger than Destin,” Barker said, noting that Destin captains need to reach out to Orange Beach, Panama City and Carrabelle.

“You can have a peaceful show of solidarity ... you’ve got to send a message,” Barker said. “This is our home and we need to show support here. Now is the time for your Tea Party.”

Capt. Bud Miller of the Melanie Dawn spoke against the blockade of the pass.

“All that does is it puts me against you,” he said. “We can’t block ourselves. That’s what they want us to do ... fight against each other.”

Miller’s suggestion was for area fishermen to save up their fish carcasses for a week or so, load them up in a tractor trailer and haul them to Tallahassee or the Capitol to let congressmen and our representatives know we don’t like what is happening.

“They could smell us coming. Now is the time to make a big stink,” Miller said.

“I don’t want to get them rotten,” said Capt. Harold Staples of the Al-Lin,  “but I want them to smell ’em.

“They’ve manipulated their numbers,” Staples said of the regulators. “They don’t have a clue as to what’s going on out there,” he said as he pointed to the Gulf.

Staples suggests that maybe the DCBA take out an ad in USA Today to get the attention of others.

“The limits are working,” Staples said. “But they’ve got to let us catch something. Just give us a little trickle. These people are out of control.”

After much discussion, Robson suggested that maybe a “big assembly out in the harbor” would be best.

“This is not just about the amberjack,” Robson said. “It’s about flawed data. “Next year it’s the grouper ... it’s a downhill spiral.”

Capt. Mike Eller of the Lady Em was for “getting their attention right here, right now” with the blockade.

However, he said the peaceful assembly in a couple of weeks is “probably a smarter choice.”
Robson put it to a vote, and the majority, by a show of hands agreed to an assembly in the channel on Saturday, Nov. 7.

“Let’s not lose this momentum,” Robson said. “Spread the word to others in the community.

He explained that we have one section of government trying to stimulate the economy while the other side is “putting us out of work.”

“We’re not asking for the world, just give us something.”

FALL IN!
The Destin Charter Boat Association is asking that all recreational fisherman join them at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, in a peaceful assembly aboard their boats from Crab Island to the channel.

jlly what do you do for a living? Because you know this our job right its how we make a living and pay bills and provide for our families. Its not a hobby. Im sure you would be upset if the feds came in told you that you could no longer make a living. Then on top of that they tell you that the data they are using to make this decision was fatally flawed but its the best science that we have avalible so we are going to use it to enforce an act that was passed. Oh and we are only going to do half of the stuff that it mandates because the other stuff is to hard to figure out. The fact is that the families that have been doing this for generations have their whole life wrapped up in their investments. The goverment is trying to shut down an industry of mom and pop businesses that support a lot of local communities. The destin fishing fleet and the destin fishing rodeo bring in tens of millions of dollars a year to this local economy. While not the only thing to do in the destin it is still part of our towns heritage and a major componet to our local economy.

The sos plan goes along with trying to make our for hire piece of the pie accountable. I am not a big fan of the sos but if we cant all pull together and get an accurate accountable way to count fish then we as for hire fisherman are going to have to go with a plan that not only protects our clients but protects our investment and our means to make a living. The for hire fishing industry is in trouble and many of my family and friends are close to losing it all if something doesnt change. This is a industry that would thrive even in difficult economic times if there was just a little lax in mass over regulation that is being bestowed upon it. The private rec fisherman is the black hole of unknown catch history and the nmfs knows that and is using it against us to try to divide us. The sos plan in many peoples opinion is now on the back burner. They dont know if they are going to make it in the business long enought to even get close to implementing it. Please stand united in this. We need everyone in this battle.

The sos plan was put in the mix because its the only plan anyone has came up with that works off real time data. In the spring this year at the fwcc meeting in sandestin the private rec fisherman stood up and said give us our snappers we dont care what the feds do and if the charter boats dont like it let them give up there federal fishing permit. This is exactly what the feds want. They are pitting us against each other so they can divide and concur. Any one that thinks this is to protect the fish is very misinformed. The data has been stated by all side to be flawed even the feds. But in the last two years that this has been known they have done nothing to help fix it. They stand by this data claiming that it is the best available science. The idea of the private rec fisherman having to count their fish did not go over well with them. They just wanted to fight the feds tooth and nail. To protect their hobby. The point is that feds shut our fisheries down because we are in there terms unaccountable.

I would like to see how big brother will look after the charter boat captains and deck hands after they run them out of work.

The assembly is not about the SOS program. No matter who you support you are biting off your nose to spite your face if you don't participate. NO ONE can catch amberjack in federal waters at this time, NO ONE can catch red snapper period. Next month it will be mingos or kings. Something has to be done now, we can worry about catch shares later, no one wins if we are all sitting at the docks.

Please explain to me how Scott Robson and many of the other captains in the destin fleet can fight for sector seperation on one hand, and then on the other hand ask for the recreational sector to stand beside them and fight to keep the season open? I stood beside the charter boat captains for years, but recently they've turned their backs on us, recreational fishermen, and have tried to split our quota, not even a equal split, they want a majority. You won't find me at this peaceful assembly helping to save the charter boats. for more information check out saveoursector . com, feel free to boycott the captains and vessels who have shown support for the SOS plan

Anything wanting national attention will have to be bigger than protesting in front of the NMFS office doors. Enviromentalists 'wackos' as they are often called for caring have done this for decades and the onely ones that ever hear about it are other enviros. I'd opt for the assembly in the channel. Blockadeing would likely be illegal just like blocking a road, bot a large asswembly in the pass shoule get attention. Especially if someone sends video directly to anti big government shows like o'reily or beck on fox.

There are MANY organized and well funded groups in support of recreational fishing, and MANY in hot pursuit against the commercial fishing industry. Have you contacted all of them and asked for their support? Politics, publicity and protesting type of situation is their PROFESSION and they have both inside connections and scientific data that demonstrates where the real over fishing problem is, and they know if and where exhisting data is weak or flawed. MANY people who work for 'Big Brother' will help you from the inside too, if you appeal to them and work with them, reasonably. Use your allies, resources and brains, wisely. An angry mobs and blockades make a good ho dunk side show, but no one can work with an angy mob, or with someone having a temper tantrum. A show of force, with no action plan is usually uneventful in the long run, so give your 'supporters' and demonstraters a follow up action plan ie. pre written letters of appeal with fax numbers, etc. Remember the regulations ARE about the FISH, not about hurting YOU! Get a respectful spokesperson and get busy establishing an action oriented support network. Phone ALL your old customers, as if they can provide any 'connections', and if they can make a call on your behalf. Lastly, it is indeed your realm, so for your own sake, figure out ways to increse the numbers of fish!

there must be a bigger plan by the feds they want it all for the commercial guys so they can tax the heck out it or something i don't know but there is a much bigger plan to control our resources and it has to be about the money any thoughts on this and who is this liberal dr. crabtree is he serious

The guys do have a job and work harder than the majority of people out there. There are no "40" hour work weeks, there is no retirement, paid vacations, bonuses, sick leave. They are a close knit community and would give and have given the shirts off their backs to help each other. They are not asking for a hand out, they are just asking that the NMFS be fair. Enough is enough and it is time to show Big Brother that we won't just sit back and let them stick it to us this time.

You can sail on down to the Bahamas. The fishing is unbelievable there and no one bothers you. I have three boats there and they run every day with no government interference.

bye to the snapper and bye to the aj and the grouper already have their moving van packed for next year. the wrong species keeps getting sent packing. its time for everyone in the national marine fisheries to be sent packing. they have no guilt or feelings for each charter family they ruin so show them no mercy. sadly they are a protected species between the commercial fishermen block and courts they are an arrogant bunch of donkeys
