Local author creates a universe for his first novel

The hardest part of novel-writing, Niceville author B.A Larremore says, is making time to start writing.

“The toughest part is finding the time to sit down and do it,” Larremore, whose first novel came out this month, told The Log. “Once I sit down, I go and go and go and go. I’ve got hundreds of single books I have outlines for that are part of the Spectross universe.”

Larremore saw the first of those books, “Spectross Wars: The Raven and the Dove,” released this summer. The novel is the first in a fantasy series set on Spectross, a cursed world that no longer spins in its orbit; the hero’s destiny is to set the world spinning again.

Larremore said the biggest influences on his work were J.R.R. Tolkien, “my first introduction to fantasy,” and comic book writers such as Spider-Man creator Stan Lee: “(My book) isn’t a comic-book, but the characters do have powers and Stan Lee was great at characterization in his comics.”

Larremore added that his favorite fantasy authors are R.A. Salvatore and Michael J. Stackpole, for their writing style and the way they handle action scenes.

“I love to write and create things,” Larremore said. “The fun part is establishing the characters, taking them on their journey, seeing how they develop. How they respond to each obstacle that comes their way, how they make their own path.

“The hardest part is rewriting and rewriting. Just making sure that it’s finely detailed, (checking) grammar and syntax, making sure it’s an easy enough read.”
