BACON TO THE RESCUE: Australian lifeguard celeb patrols Destin's beaches (VIDEO)

Destin locals and tourists planning to hit the beaches this summer may want to take a closer look at the lifeguard in the ATV watching over them. The guy in the red shorts and sunglasses might be Australian reality TV celeb, Adriel “Bacon” Young.

“I'm a pretty quiet person and all of sudden my work became a reality TV program. It's definitely very different for me,” said the 23-year-old lifeguard.

Bondi Rescue is an Australian reality TV series that follows the lifeguards of Bondi Beach. Viewers from around the world, including the UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and the United States, tune in to follow the challenges facing the team at Australia’s busiest beach.

Because they film every day for four months, they get a lot of things, but they mainly show major incidents, like resuscitations of people, big rescues. Of course they try to add a little humor,” said Young. “There are some funny things that go on on our beach. It's kind of a circus at Bondi.”

Monday morning at Holiday Isle, Young was greeted by two American fans that had been following him on Twitter in hopes of catching a peek of the Aussie while in Destin. The two women asked him to dinner and snapped a photo with “Bacon,” a nickname given to him by his co-stars because of his resemblance to Kevin Bacon.

It's weird for me because I'm just a lifeguard. I grew up in the country,” he said. A lot of people send me things at work. Pictures, mix tapes, some lady cross-stitched all our names and sent us framed photos.”

Young is described by his Facebook fans as being “so cute” with a “gorgeous, bubbly personality,” but the Aussie celebrity says he shies away from all the attention.

“Some of the boys I work with love it… I still don't like the sound of my own voice on camera so I'm pretty quiet when the cameras come around,” he said.

For seven years, Young has been a lifeguard at the kilometer-long beach just outside of Sydney, Australia.

“A lot of people come down to our beach and go swimming fully clothed,” he said. “They get straight off the buses... and they don't have any idea what they're doing. I've rescued people with shoes on, fully clothed. There's not much beach knowledge getting out around there.”

But during the winter season in Australia, Young travels to Destin with the lifeguard exchange program when the summer season is just heating up.

It's such a great experience to be able to pick up different skills I've learned over here from different people, and I take them home with me and try and bring ideas over here,” he said.

Young says the Destin-style of lifeguarding is a lot different than back at home where he works on a team with nine others.

In Destin, “cause we have such a big area to cover by ourselves, it puts you on edge the whole time because you know while you might be down looking at these people, something could be going on down on the other side... There's a lot more pressure put on the individual here.”

Bondi Rescue is getting ready for its seventh season of filming and will broadcast on Fuel TV in the states. Young said he doesn’t see himself starring on the big screen in the future, but he does plan to lifeguard for as long as he can.

I've just had a love of the ocean since I was a kid, so it just seemed natural to make my hobby my work. It's perfect,” he said. “It feels like everyday I'm not working.”
