NOT A RED LIGHT CAM: FDOT cameras regulate traffic flow (PHOTOS)
Cameras like this one at the intersection of Hwy. 98 and Danny Wuerffel Way can be seen at intersections throughout Destin. According to public services director Steve Schmidt, the cameras belong to the Florida Department of Transportation and they are designed to allow FDOT to monitor traffic.
“I understand they have the capability to actually adjust the signal timing to aid the flow during exceptional traffic tie-ups.”
According to the FDOT’s traffic operations division, in the Destin area there are a total of five closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras along Hwy. 98. They are at: Hwy. 98 and Regatta Bay Drive, Hwy 98 and Crystal Beach Drive, Hwy. 98 and Danny Wuerffel Way, Hwy. 98 and Triumph Way and Hwy. 98 and Gulf Shores Drive.
The addition of CCTV cameras along Hwy. 98 was one component of a larger joint effort by Okaloosa County and FDOT to improve traffic flow, create a more reliable traffic signal system, and reduce traffic signal down time throughout the Okaloosa County region.
They are not used as a law enforcement tool or as red light cameras.
