‘Taking Care of Folks': Orthopedist offers up old-fashioned care in Destin

If you’re looking for an old-fashioned relationship with your orthopedist, then look no further than the office of Dr. Vic Allen. Located at 36008 Emerald Coast Pkwy, Dr. Allen provides general care ranging from stabilization of the lumbar spine to arthroscopy.

“I’m here to serve the needs of the community,” said Allen. “If you sprain your ankle at work, we have an open-policy where we will see you today or tomorrow.”

Dr. Allen, 63, has been an orthopedist since 1984. After finishing his undergraduate studies at the University of Cincinnati, he served in the Navy during Vietnam. Afterwards, he attended the University of South Alabama where he earned his doctorate in orthopedics.

“I’ve been all around the world with the Navy, and I’ve never seen water as pretty as it is here,” said Allen. “And the weather is just beautiful.”

He and his wife, Jan, have been visiting Destin for nearly 30 years.

“We used to fish from the peninsula where the Coast Guard Station is now,” said Allen. “It’s amazing to see how much Destin has grown.”

Dr. Allen made his move to Destin in February 2010 from Mobile, Ala., where he practiced for 15 years.

“I was originally supposed to work in Crestview, but when things didn’t work out I had the choice to go back to Mobile,” said Allen. Instead of returning to the big city atmosphere and the hustle and bustle, Allen decided to move to Destin.

“Destin is more service-oriented and the people are more personable,” said Allen. “And I just enjoy living here. I’m a big boat fanatic.”

Dr. Allen couples treatment with education to keep his patients healthy. He plans to reach out to the senior citizens in the community and provide tools to help keep them active.

“People are entitled to education and physical therapy so they can make healthy decisions about their body,” said Allen. “The relationship you have with your doctor is 30 percent of the healing process.”

Promising to fill in the gaps and provide services that other orthopedist don’t, Allen and his staff emphasize the motto “Taking care of folks.”
