Crestview pair arrested after leaving children in sweltering car

CRESTVIEW -- A man and woman were arrested June 20 after they admitted to leaving two young children unsupervised in a car without air conditioning for about 10 minutes while they moved furniture, according to their Crestview Police Department arrest reports.

C'Era Lajoyce Langford, who is 19, and William Michael Gilley, who is 20, were charged with felony child neglect.

The two children, who were 7 months old and 31 months old, were "drenched in sweat," when they were removed from the car. One was also soaked in urine, according to the arrest reports.

Langford and Gilley told police they were away from the car for about 10 minutes, with no air conditioning and the windows only rolled down a few inches. Gilley said the children were asleep and he didn't want to wake them. Langford said she knew the children could have suffered from the heat, according to the report.

Temperatures at the time were in the mid- to high-70s, with 97 percent humidity, the reports said.

On the way to the county jail, Gilley complained about being hot. The windows were rolled up and the air conditioning was on high at the time, according to the report.

Should the city have settled with The Oasis?
No. Under no circumstances should a strip club be allowed to open in Destin.
No. I think the city could have negotiated better terms.
Yes. I don't want nude dancing in Destin, but the city can't legally ban strip clubs.
Yes. Bring on the half-naked women!
I don't care. A strip club won't last long in Destin.
