DCA has a Field Day
The clouds rolled in, but Destin Christian Academy’s Field Day rolled on.
Students, parents and teachers took a change of pace on Wednesday to engage in some fun and friendly competition.
“It’s a joy just seeing the kids smile,” says former DCA coach of ten years, Shanah Mikel.
Now employed at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, Mikel returned for the day to help with the races.
“I like to keep them moving,” Mikel told The Log.
The kindergarten through fifth-grade classes competed in sac races, sprints, three-legged races, wheel barrow races, tug-of-war, water events and a Frisbee throw. The winners of the races took home first, second and third place ribbons.
“I was in the 25-yard dash, sac race, and Frisbee throw,” fifth-grader Josh Preston said as he waited to begin his next race.
Some of the games were a challenge.
The three-legged race proved to be one of the more difficult races that required teamwork and strategy.
“You have to make a plan (of) how you’re going to walk,” says fifth-grader Grant Sory. “It’s a mental game.”
Field day wasn’t the only treat for the youngsters. Wednesday was also an early release day. Any day to get out of school early is always a reason to celebrate.
At least for most.
“I have to go to the orthodontist today,” fifth-grader Christian Garner told The Log about his impending afternoon.
