Man breaks Destin hotel windows, too drunk to talk to cops

Florida Freedom Newspapers

DESTIN -- An Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office deputy responding to a report of broken windows at the Village Inn of Destin found a man whose speech was so slurred he couldn't be understood.

The deputy was first called to the hotel on Jan. 31 at about 3:30 a.m. Hotel employees showed him several broken windows and a witness said they had seen a white man hitting and kicking the windows. Another witness reported seeing a man swinging a garbage can lid at a window.

The suspect was not there at the time.

An hour later, the deputy was called back to the hotel, which is when he found the 26-year-old man walking around the parking lot. He read him his rights and tried to interview him, but the man was too intoxicated, according to his arrest report.

Witnesses identified the man as the one they had seen breaking windows.

The suspect listed his current occupation as being in the U.S. Army, working with Explosive Ordnance Disposal and gave his address as being on Eglin Air Force Base.

He was charged with criminal mischief. The windows will cost about $700 to replace.

Should the city have settled with The Oasis?
No. Under no circumstances should a strip club be allowed to open in Destin.
No. I think the city could have negotiated better terms.
Yes. I don't want nude dancing in Destin, but the city can't legally ban strip clubs.
Yes. Bring on the half-naked women!
I don't care. A strip club won't last long in Destin.
