30 years ago — 1982
Destin landowner Mattie M. Kelly plans development on her land east of Destin to include shopping center, government offices, hospital, high school, botanical gardens, college extension offices, residential community and a highway extending to the foot of a bridge that would connect the Destin area to north shore of Choctawhatchee Bay.
From 1972-1982, 3,370 condominium units were built in Destin, with 1,105 more under construction. Delbert Marler says condominium is “a cuss word to most of these fishermen around here.”
Okaloosa County school officials see no need yet for a junior high facility in Destin, even though elementary school has been expanded.
