One drowns in Destin, several more rescued from surf
One
person drowned Friday evening at James Lee Park, a beach safety chief
said, and lifeguards spent Saturday pulling more swimmers from the same
spot.
The danger there was "just a really bad rip" current, said Destin Beach Safety Chief Joe D'Agostino.
"The rest of Destin is placid," he said.
Neither
he nor Destin firefighters could identify Friday's drowning victim. The
incident occurred just after 6 p.m., D'Agostino said.
By about the same time Saturday, he said lifeguards had rescued 10 people from the same area, despite it being cordoned off.
"People have a tendency to think we just need to get more signs out, more flags, and that's just not working," he said.
