RON HART: Health care hijacking hijinks

ROSEMARY BEACH — My oldest child plans to use her summer vacation from Vanderbilt to intern for Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss. I know you are shocked; yes, there are still some Republican Senators left.

Since she plans to head to medical school next year so that she can become a freshly-minted doctor saddled with student loans just in time for socialized medicine, she will be working on the “vision” of   nationalized health care currently proposed by the emboldened Democrats. This is their attempt to top one bad idea with another and to undermine the free market that has led us to such prosperity. To quote P.J. O'Rourke, “If you think health care is expensive now, wait 'till it is free.”

After regulating into submission the auto companies, banks and Fannie Mae (thus giving the Federal government large stakes in all of them), the Dems now plan to use their magical business prowess on one-seventh of our economy, the best health care system in the world.  At long last, our banking, car manufacturing and health care will be as efficiently run as Amtrak, the DMV, the Property Assessor's Office and the Post Office.

If the bailout of these industries does not work, don't worry, be happy.  The government has a backup plan to bail out the bailout.

Just imagine how hard the current CEO of GM, Barack Obama, will negotiate with the UAW union on its next contract. Plus, I am sure he will engorge all of the union members' health care benefits and pensions so they are awash in Viagra and gold chains when they retire at age 50. That should be a comfort to you as our budget deficit skyrockets and more of our economy is controlled by politicians.

Let's look at the future of these newly confiscated businesses that government will soon control by using the business model or, as they like to call it, the “service” (just to show they have a sense of humor) model of the US Postal Service.

Be assured, pro-union Obama will do nothing to cost the Postal Workers Union anything. Democrats are more afraid of asking a union to make sacrifices than they are of a registered letter.

In a year when Fed Ex and UPS made billions and paid taxes, the United States Postal “Service” lost $2.4 billion. What makes the loss more interesting is that most of that money was lost in the mail.

Since there is little demand for their “service,” the USPS has now raised the price of a stamp to forty-four cents in response.  Our government will apply the same logic to Chrysler and GM upon gaining control of them. If the 2012 Cobalt does not sell at $13,000, the government will simply raise the price to $92,000 and eliminate two of the cup holders.

The Postal Service is also threatening to end Saturday mail service, so those of you who enjoy getting unsolicited flyers and junk mail on weekends will be left to suffer.

The USPS is all about attention to new and cutting edge ideas. Even as we speak, the Postal Service is looking for ways to save Americans money by sending correspondence and documents almost instantly in a manner that does not involve them and saves fuel and paper. They have an exploratory committee formed and expect a report by 2020. If you have any suggestions on how this can be done, you could e-mail them, if only there were e-mail at the Postal Service. As it stands now, you are asked to send your ideas in a registered letter, addressed to “Occupant,” to the USPS post office box.

As Fed-Ex and UPS have proven in package delivery, free market competition is the answer to affordable health care in America. If health care consumers were allowed to shop for their services, had to pay for it directly, and really understood the pricing, the system would fix itself by sorting out the winners and losers.

It is amazing that government's answer to every problem is spending more of our money to put us deeper in debt. Wow, that is spare “change” we can all believe in.

There is no "free-market solution" for lazy. Never has been, never will. Hart rocks!

We have what, 40 to 50 million uninsured in this country? If there's a great free-market solution, why isn't someone tapping into that market.

I am with Hart, it would be fine with me to get the mail once a week. With emails and online bill presentment, the USPS is becoming irrelevant. But that will not stop the Feds from wasting money on that union. I fear for this country. I am glad Hart points his finger at it all and makes us laugh.

r4back-your financial data regarding USPS is contradictory. All that is required to assess the business health of the Postal service is to attempt to get effecient and/or courteous service at the counter of a Post Office branch.

I am a nurse and Hart is right on this. Allow him is opinion if he thinks we have the most advanced healthcare system. Try to get a surgery in Canada---it takes years. You are dead, but it is free. Maybe Obama can go to Turkey and apologize for our healthcare system too. I have heard Hart on the radio show several times, he makes a compelling and well reasoned case for a free-market solution to this. And he is cute.

Well Cliff Clavin, Guess you must be a union postal worker. And that is the reason they are not good. Name an industry that is heavily unionized that has not bankrupt it's business? You liberals hate it, but Hart make a brilliant point. And, he is funny--something you guys are not.

I can see that there was not much research done. It has been widely published over and over that the loss sustained by the USPS in FY 2008 was 2 point 8 Billion. Mr Hart also fails to consider the affect of the Postal Reform Law that requires a more than 5 Billion payment each year to prefund future retiree health benefits. That is in addition to the almost 2 Billion paid for current retiree benefits. UPS and FedEx also had to make provisions to fund future benefits for their workers. The difference is that they were able to amortize the payments over 30 years. The USPS was given 10. How many major corporations when faced with looming deficits simply cut off some benefits for their workers? I am thankful that I have a job. I am thankful that I make a good living. I am thankful that I have health and retirement benefits available to me. Nobody really could have seen this current situation coming to the degree that it has. I would remind Mr Hart that the USPS is only a Quasi Governmental agency. Although permitted to run semi independently it is still under the scrutiny and mandate of the Fed. In fact the USPS has received no taxpayer money for almost 25 years. Another fact is that Congress still fails to completely fund the Revenue Foregone Act to reimburse the USPS for services rendered at a reduced cost to qualifying organizations or individuals as mandated by Congress. I am sure that I could go on and on but I am sure that if anyone has gotten this far they must be bored to tears. If just cranks my giblets when some who claim to be knowledgeable on a certain subject go off on a rant that exhibits that they knew little to nothing at all. I apologize Mr Hart if I struck a nerve or offended you. I could not read this column and then not leave any comment.

Hart is dead on correct. What healthcare system is better Frasier? Kings and 3rd world tin horn leaders come to the USA when they are sick. Everyone in the USA get treated free if ill, even illegals. Great column

Mr. Hart you have no earthly idea what it's like "down Here", no idea.

I couldn't help but choke when I read the statement, "the best healthcare system in the world". Where did you get that idea, out of a hat? It's commonly known that we have a very poor world ranking, and the WHO puts us at about 37th in the world. How about doing a little research before you step up on that soapbox, Mr. Hart.
