Pink flamingo off course in Holiday Isle (photo)

This pink flamingo, likely displaced by the latest tropical turbulence, is camping out behind Destin Pointe on Holiday Isle. The bird's aren't regular visitors to this part of Florida, and this one may have relocated after Tropical Storm Fay and Gustav menaced South Florida.

Resident Rick Place said perhaps the bird escaped from the Gulf Breeze Zoo.

"It would have had to have come from a hell of a long way, otherwise," he said.

Amanda Wilkerson with the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge said The Zoo doesn't have flamingos. In fact, she said she has never heard of a pink flamingo being sighted in Northwest Florida, but that a colleague heard that a few of the birds also showed up in Mississippi after Gustav.

The bird first appeared this morning, Place said.

"It had made itself at home, and I don't think its gonna leave anytime soon."

Refuge volunteers were worried that such a bird shouldn't be here for long. They said they were planning to check on the bird.

"He may need help to get back home."
