Kaleidoscopes of Opportunity: New local art boutique opens on resurgent Main Street

Main Street Plaza

Main Street Plaza is home to local activists, eager to come together and see a positive change on their street. “I think just the recognition of getting more people on Main Street is a better thing for the community, that’s what I’m looking forward to,” said Frank McKenzie owner of Aquatropic Marine Canvas and Upholstery.

A bustling collaboration of artists chatted and arranged paintings along the wall of Kaleidoscopes, the newest art boutique in Destin.

Located in Main Street Plaza, Kaleidoscopes is just one of many new businesses popping up along Main Street.

"We decided we wanted local artists and crafters," explained Lisa Hobbs, co-owner of Kaleidoscopes, alongside her husband Tim.

"About 85 percent of the store is local art," added Hobbs, noting that other gift items are also available. "There are 14 local artists lined up right now."

Hobbs explained that one exciting reason to be on Main Street right now, is the new Main Street Betterment Alliance.

"The motto is, 'Bring Destin Back to Destin,' " said Hobbs.

Ron Sandstead, owner of Flutterby Antiques Uniques and Gifts, located in the adjacent parking lot to Kaleidoscopes, founded MSBA last year after learning that the Main Street area is considered a “depressed area,” according to City guidelines.
