High levels of fecal bacteria detected at East Pass; water advisories issued
The Okaloosa County Health Department has issued advisories for the East Pass and Gulf Islands National Seashore on Okaloosa Island, as well as Lincoln Park in Valparaiso.
High levels of fecal coliform were found at all three sites, according to a news release. Levels were “too numerous to count” around Gulf Islands National Seashore, on the sound side of Okaloosa Island. High levels of enteroccoci were also detected at the two Okaloosa Island sites.
Swimming in these waters should be considered a health risk.
Fecal pollution may come from storm water runoff, pets, wildlife and human sewage.
