At Hooters, the wing is king on Super Bowl Sunday.
"We will sell 12,000 pounds of wings in 11 restaurants," Director of Operations Phillip Robinson said of the restaurant’s region that includes Alabama and parts of Florida. "Our next biggest day is about 400 pounds, which is typically a busy summer holiday."
When the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers meet in Super Bowl XLVII Sunday, one team will leave New Orleans with the Vince Lombardi trophy. Off of the field, prep work is under way in Destin as local restaurants and sports bars brace themselves for one of the busiest days of the year.
Robinson told The Log that Destin's Hooters has plenty of high-definition televisions to please the most rabid sports fan during the big game, as they proudly boast more than 50 TVs.
As part of a game-day giveaway, somebody at the Destin location is going to win wings for a year. This entitles them to one free order of wings each week for the year. There will also be scratch off cards where 1-in-2 people win free food or merchandise. They will also play host to a companywide giveaway where three individuals will win a $10,000 prize.
Over at Johnny O'Quigley's, owner Charlie Gleason is expecting a big crowd to gather at his Irish-themed hangout.
"It's going to be busy," he said. "We suggest you get here early."
The team at Quigs will prep more than 250-pounds of chicken wings for game day, and then another 50-100 pounds for to-go orders. The wings can be dressed in a variety of seven different sauces or rubs.
Quigs will be offering guests $10.00 buckets of domestic bottled beers and $16.99 buckets of bottled imports, as well as their famous towers of beer for $16.99.
Gleason said they will also be raising money for the Fallen Warriors, who are in the midst of a 450-mile ruck march to raise awareness and funds for the Children of the Fallen Warrior Scholarship fund. A free Bud Light will be given to those who come in and donate from noon until game time.
"We'd love for you to come and celebrate with us," Gleason said.
Poppy's Time Out Sports Bar at Destin Commons will also have some game day specials. They will be offering boneless wings for $11.95, complete with a free pitcher of Miller Lite. Ultimate Nachos are also on the menu for $16.95, which can be topped with pulled pork.
There will also be plenty of drink specials, prizes and giveaways.
And restaurants are not the only ones prepping for the big game. As the owner of End Zone Apparel, Kristal Roberts is expecting business to pick up.
"I'll get a rush of people who are not necessarily fans of either team, but they will come in and get something to wear to their party," Roberts said. "Last year, the Giants merchandise barely moved all season until they reached the Super Bowl."
And while Ravens and 49ers gear is not something that Roberts typically carries a lot of, she told The Log she has stocked up on merchandise for those who want to stop by. She will be open on Sunday as long as she has product to sell.
Super Bowl XLVII will air on CBS (Channel 5) at 5:30 p.m.
