Four days a week, more than 20 Destin Middle School students meet as part of a five-week running camp of sorts to get in shape for the upcoming cross country season that starts in August.

Not only do they run on campus at Regatta Bay, but they travel around to a different area in the community each day.

One day they run from the Crab Trap at James Lee Park to Pompano Joe's, and another they run from Clement Taylor Park across the Destin bridge and back.

"I did this last year and word got out," said Destin running coach Ben Kackley. So his turnout for the camp has doubled in numbers.

"Everybody starts at the same level," Kackley told the youth as they took a breather at Clement Taylor Park last Thursday. "With work you can be of value to a cross country team."

The running camp began July 8 and goes until Aug. 8 with the youth running Monday through Thursday.
