Paramedics put a Dewey Destin diner into an ambulance after she passed out at the restaurant.

‘A happy ending' after nurse assists struggling diner at Dewey Destin's

During a medical emergency at Dewey Destin Seafood Restaurant on Wednesday, a registered nurse who happened to be dining at the local favorite, helped stabilize a women suspected of having a heart attack.

The nurse used one of the defibrillators that many restaurants in the area keep on hand for just such an emergency.

“From what I heard, a lady passed out and was possibly having a heart attack,” Dewey Destin said. “I wasn't there, but luckily there was a lady there that knew how to use it.”

Destin said that while the defibrillator was deployed, it did not actually fire.

“It's pretty amazing,” Destin said. “It will only shock you if it picks up an electric rhythm that tells it you’re having a heart attack.”

The restaurant has had the device on hand for about a year and a half, and three of the employees, Destin included, have taken the training course. According to Destin, when a person is having a heart attack, each minute, after two, that passes without intervention decreases the chance of survival.

“This had a happy ending,” Destin said. “The lady was conscious and talking when she left.”
