Cops: Beware of local phone scam

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office reports that a phone scam targeting local businesses has surfaced in the area.

A company typically calls and solicits for donations and advertising space on sports merchandise. The business owners are told that it's all part of a fundraiser for a particular school or school organization such as a cheerleading squad. However the fundraiser is not sanctioned by the local school or related organization.

Similar phone scams involving a company from Texas have been reported recently in other parts of the country.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office wants to remind citizens not to provide their credit card number over the phone to any unknown solicitor and to report any suspicious activity.
