HOOTERS FISHING REPORT for August 3, 2011
Pier/Surf
The temperature is hot, but the water is clear and calm at the Okaloosa Island Pier. Anglers are hooking up with tarpon most everyday in the early morning and late afternoons. King mackerel, Spanish mackerel, hardtail and bluefish are also being caught off the pier. Hardtail, ladyfish and whiting are being caught in the surf.
Inshore/Bay
Trout and redfish are still the ticket inshore. The speckled trout are a bit spotty, but there are still a few around the docks and grass flats. Redfish are showing up around the jetties and the bridges.
Offshore/Bottom
Amberjack are back on the catch list and several of the boats brought in their share on Monday — one per person, per day. Capt. Eric Thrasher and crew pulled in six amberjack from 180 feet of water on Monday. Trolling live or frozen cigar minnows is good for king mackerel near the broken bottom or timber holes. Mingo, triggerfish and scamp are still being caught. Wahoo and dolphin are showing up offshore, 180-plus feet of water. Benjamin Vick on the Checkmate 2 pulled in a 40-pound wahoo Monday fishing 10 miles offshore.
