Coast Guard Station Destin officers finally got to showcase their hard work and creativity as they opened their Haunted House last weekend.

Using their own money and free time, officers have been transforming the Coast Guard boat garage into a demented house of horrors since late August.

"It's all on the member's own time and dime," said Boatswain's Mate 1st Class Michael Shallue.

The house is strictly a team effort, especially during the recent government shutdown, Shallue said. Groups of three each got to chose a room and decorate it to their liking.

"There's a lot of new people participating this year since we have 70 percent new staff," explained Shallue.

The Haunted House takes cues from modern and classic horror movies. There's lots of blood, random body parts and even a few hanging rescue dummies.

"We recommended that the haunted house is for children aged 10 and up," Shallue said.
