In a class of her own
Vicki Mathews named Teacher of the Year
When it comes to keeping a class of 5th graders at Destin Elementary School on task, Vicki Mathews knows best. After exemplifying the standards set to recognize teaching excellence in our community, Mathews was chosen by the school district to receive the honor of being the city’s Teacher of the Year.
The nomination, put in by fellow teacher Gayle Johnson, paid off for Mathews. Her title comes with the monetary prize of $1,000. In her 19th year of elementary education, Mathews is no stranger to molding the minds of Destin’s youth. Peering around her vibrant classroom, one can see Mathews’ accomplished teaching style. She passes on the value of acceptance and the importance of asking questions and having a positive attitude. Mathews, now in her 14th year with DES, always knew she wanted to teach elementary school.
“I’ve wanted to do it since I was a child myself,” Mathews says. “I’ve never imagined doing anything else.”
After 19 years of experience, Mathews has developed a couple of teaching philosophies that help her to pass knowledge on to young minds.
“Each child is unique,” she says of teaching a diverse bunch throughout the years.
Mathews has realized the significance of respecting the individuality of children today and continuing to evolve as an educator. “I myself as a teacher have to continue to learn,” she says.
Mathews finds real gratification and purpose in her career.
Being named Destin Elementary’s Teacher of the Year is just icing on the cake.
